Tapestry Mosaic with Gillian

Learn how to create amazing Tapestry Mosaics

Tapestry mosaic is non-grouted or embedded mosaic.  In this series of two classes, students will learn techniques for creating beautiful solid tapestry mosaics reminiscent of Laurel Skye. This is a great class for learning different ways to use beads and to explore what found objects can be used.  We cover what materials can be used, adhesives, application of tesserae and ways to finish pieces so they have a polished look.

Beaded Saguaro Cactus Workshop

Create a beautiful, beaded cactus using tapestry mosaic techniques.  For this class, we will use an 8″ wooden cutout cactus, strung seed beads plus other beads and charms to add visual interest and create a focal point.  Once you have mastered this technique you can cover other shapes to create fun art projects.  Everything you need will be provided to make a green cactus with a charm and beads.  For a multicolored cactus, bring your own seed beads. Orange, purple, yellow or turquoise work well, and additional beads for texture.  More specific instructions will be provided about a week before class.

4” x 4” Square Tapestry Mosaic Panel

This is the first class in the series.  For this class all the materials are provided including tiles, beads, and a central focal point.  Students will create a 4” x 4” square tapestry mosaic wooden panel that can hang (hanger included) or be displayed free-standing. This is mostly a technique class where students learn about adhesives, methods of application and what to look for when selecting beads and other objects for their tapestry mosaic pieces.  You will leave with a finished piece.

3” x 12” Tapestry Mosaic Panel

In the 2nd class in this series, students provide much of their own materials based on what was learned in the first class.  Now the surface is a 3″ x 12″ panel, and the focus shifts to design. This is a two-session class.  Day 1 is for basic layout, prepping the panel and getting the boarder done. Day 2 is fining tuning your design, adhering your tesserae to complete a stunning mosaic and ways to create a polished and strong piece.  The sessions are a week apart so students can find the perfect pieces for their creations and can explore design ideas without the pressure of needing to finish.   Raid your button box, explore your bead hoard, look through your broken jewelry for materials to bring to class.  Think bottle caps, fused glass, polymer clay and ceramic pieces, the ideas are endless.  Complete instructions on the materials that students need to finish the project are provided after registration.  Students will need to have most of their materials by the first day of class.

Class length:  two, 3.5 hour classes
